Vistas references papel picado (cut paper) as an allegory for hope, displacement, migration, and their relationship to "The American Dream". Papel picado is a Mexican art form in which intricate designs are cut out of thin squares of paper made from bark. Originally, cut paper came from China and through Italian trade markets and arrived in Spain in the 16th Century and later the Americas.
